My sister found an organization that hosts one of the largest one-day volunteer events to benefit clean oceans and waterways — Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup.
On Saturday, September 15, thousands of people will descend on beaches, lakes and streams all over the world to remove trash and debris on land and in the water.
To my surprise this event has been around for nearly 20 years, yet I never heard of it!
My sister planned on being one of the local team leaders, but later found out she had to work. Without hesitation, I offered to take the reins – even with minimal time for preparation.
I just kept thinking about how cool it would be to get Milwaukee involved! We will be among hundreds of thousands of people of all ages volunteering on every continent to clean, scrub and pickup their coasts – or for us, the shores of Lake Michigan.
I’m aware that this is short notice, but I wanted to invite all of you to help clean-up Bradford Beach or any other sandy or grassy patches along the lakefront – several people already expressed interest in volunteering, so thank you in advance.
Why should YOU volunteer?
- The success of this event depends on individuals like you.
- Trash removed from the shore saves marine life.
- All marine debris comes from human activity.
- Milwaukeeans love their lakefront beaches and parks.
- Be a steward in your community and meet new people.
- You will have a lot of fun!
To volunteer go here. I’ll post more details later in the week. Until then, don’t hesitate to register online or email me for more information.
Thanks!!!
What a great idea!

Tim- I'm going to post more info later tonight (hopefully). I'm thinking I'll have it kickoff at 10 a.m. at Bradford Beach and people can shuffle in whenever. Are you in?
Everyone- Spread the word! (And if a clean environment isn’t enough to get you there, how about free bagels and juice? Yeah? Intrigued?) :)
