On this Veteran's Day, I want to give a very big and heartfelt thank you to all of the men and women who have served and are currently serving in the United States military.
I am ashamed to admit that I don't normally give Veteran's Day a lot of thought. Of course I'm always grateful to those who serve, but today when I woke up I really thought about it more than usual.
The idea of leaving my family and my life to go to a faraway country and actually fight and have my life in jeopardy every day; to sleep in a strange bed and eat strange food and be surrounded by strangers while missing my loved ones every minute, not knowing when or if I'll be home again … these ideas are so foreign to me I almost can't put my mind around them.
But this is the reality for thousands upon thousands of Americans just like you and me.
I'm angry for them and for the whole world that there is war and a need for them to do what they do.
I don't know if we should be at war, I don't know how many of the troops actually believe they should be doing what they're doing over there, and none of us know what the outcome will be or when they'll be able to come home.
What I do know is that my heart and thoughts go out to them all today, and I'm going to make even more of an effort to keep them in my thoughts and prayers every single day.
I hope that knowing how grateful we all are and knowing that we truly understand the sacrifice they are making for us and our country will bring those men and women a little bit of comfort, a little bit of peace, and a huge amount of pride.
