This week, Governor Jim Doyle signed into law Senate Bill #563, the Film Wisconsin incentive legislation.
When the incentives take effect next year, it will make Wisconsin the most "film-friendly" state in the union by offering tax credits of up to 25% for qualifying productions, according to the official release.
There have been rumblings of this going on for quite awhile, and now it's official. It's not clear what kind of impact this will actually have on Wisconsin - but hopefully tax breaks will be a huge driving force for those Hollywood directors and we'll soon be seeing the likes of Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon and all kinds of other big-name actors shooting scenes in the streets of Milwaukee.
Hey, it could happen.
In all seriousness, though - this is excellent news for our great state.
Update, June 4 - The front page story of the Journal Sentinel today is about this.
Wisconsin has been used in past, favorite films...
Remember the Blues Brother's closing car chase? It's supposed to be Chicago but the interstate sequences were filmed along 794 and the Marquette Interchange... if you look closely you can see several Milwaukee landmark buildings
