This Saturday, April 15, select retailers in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward will be offering customers a day of tax-free shopping. If you'll be out shopping that day anyway, or if you're like me and need to have a very good excuse to justify a shopping trip, this is your lucky day. Depending on how much you intend to buy, you could save a nice little chunk of change - just because it’s tax day.
I'm thinking I'll have to check out Lela and Urban Kitchenwares for the first time, and that little piece of heaven - a.ka. Broadway Paper - is definitely calling my name. OnMilwaukee.com has the complete list of retailers who will be participating.
Oh boy...I'll have to forget to tell my wife about this otherwise I'll be at Broadway Paper as well.

That's great for you. We have a tax-free day in August or September, right before school starts. They exclude computers, cars and boats, though.....LOL
Michele sent me.

Be careful. You will have to pay income tax on the sales tax that the business is paying for you. Seriously.

That's crazy talk. So what happens if I don't?

Pay income tax on the salex tax? I agree Erin, that's crazy talk. Last time I checked, I didn't get W2s mailed to me from all the places I shopped.

According to the tax code you have to pay taxes on income "from whatever source derived."
"So what happens if I don't?"
Probably nothing.

Of course you didn't pay income tax on sales tax you were paying. Go re-read erin's post. You only have to do it if someone is paying your taxes for you. Haven't you ever won anything before? You're supposed to pay taxes when you win stuff; lottery etc. Same thing here. From whatever source derived. If the businesses are truly paying the sales tax for you rather than just dicounting their price the equivalent amount,it's income.
