This week, Milwaukee was named one of the 12 "Distinctive Destinations" in the U.S. for 2006 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The list honors communities that are "unique and lovingly preserved," and since 2000, the National Trust has honored 84 destinations in 41 states. Winners must meet the following criteria: well-managed growth, a commitment to historic preservation with a protected historic core and meaningful context, interesting and attractive architecture, cultural diversity, activities for families with children, an economic base of locally-owned small businesses, and walkability for residents and visitors.
I'm always proud to say I live in Milwaukee, but this makes me even prouder. It's nice to see our city receive such recognition.
